Someone I met in Holyhead told me, “It’s a nice place if you have a job.” Suddenly, what started as a weekend away with my camera became an exploration of this small island on the edge of Wales. A place I thought people came to in order to leave. My journey to Moelfre was not quite as isolated or as rural as I expected. To my surprise, the remains of heavy industry were evident amongst beautiful landscapes, experienced by tourists and inhabited by locals, both old and new. The people of Anglesey have a strong connection to their heritage, but the young people I spoke to felt there wasn’t much of a future for them on the island. It left me asking: what happens to a place when the industry that supported it leaves, and who benefits from what remains?
